How weighted averages work

Not every grade counts the same. A final worth 40% should move your average more than a quiz worth 5%. The weighted average handles that:

  1. Multiply each grade by its weight.
  2. Add all of those up.
  3. Divide by the total of the weights.

The formula: average = ∑(grade × weight) ÷ ∑(weights)

Rows without a weight are skipped, so you can fill in grades as they come in.

What do I need on my remaining work?

Type the average you are aiming for and the calculator tells you what you must score on the ungraded, remaining portion of your course. If it answers Not possible, the goal is out of reach at the current weights: even a perfect score on everything left would not get you there.

Letters mode converts each letter to a standard value (A = 95, B = 85, C = 75, D = 65, F = 0, with plus and minus steps between). Points mode simply adds up your earned points against the max points you enter.

Frequently asked questions

A simple average treats every grade equally. A weighted average multiplies each grade by its weight first, so a final exam worth 40% moves the result far more than a homework worth 5%.

Your target average cannot be reached with the remaining weight, even with perfect scores on everything left. The math says so, so you can adjust your goal early.

Each letter maps to a standard value: A+ 100, A 95, A- 90, B+ 89, B 85, B- 80, C+ 79, C 75, C- 70, D+ 69, D 65, D- 60, F 0.

When your course runs on raw points instead of percentages. Enter earned points and the max for each item, and the calculator totals them into a percentage.
